NEW LEAF COALITION LAUNCHES FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
New Leaf Coalition, an organization that is dedicated to helping Returning Citizens reintegrate into their communities and avoid reincarceration, recently launched its first fundraising campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise $50,000 by November 30, 2019.
The overall mission of the New Leaf Coalition is to assist Returning Citizens by:
- Co-sponsoring workshops and training programs on Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship, Self-Employment and other topics that will help them attain financial security and stability; and
- Establishing the required “Field of Membership” for the proposed New Leaf Federal Credit Union, a Federally-chartered entity that will be focused on meeting their unique financial needs.
In making the announcement, Flores A. Forbes, the Chair of the Coalition’s Board of Directors – and the Associate Vice President for Strategic Policy & Program Implementation in Columbia University’s Office of Government & Community Affairs – stressed that the Coalition has a unique opportunity to meet the unique financial needs of Returning Citizens.
“Many Returning Citizens have had little, if any, prior interaction with traditional banks and credit union”, Forbes said. “That’s why we need to establish a new entity that is focused on meeting the unique financial needs of Returning Citizens”.
Forbes also noted that the Coalition recently established offices in East Harlem – and has begun co-sponsoring workshops with other community-based organizations in that area. “The Coalition – and ultimately, the New Leaf Federal Credit Union – are going to become important members of our community”, Forbes said.
